V.S.Naipaul is a distinguished British Indian writer.Although In a Free State this novella did not get much attention than V.S.Naipaul's other works like A House for Mr Biswas,Miguel Street, etc.,it used to be studied from the many aspects at home and abroad, but this paper shows the research gap that few researchers have focused on the human relations in this novel and the research will based on the the theory of post-colonialism of Homi K.Bhbha,Bill Ashcroft,Gareth Grittiths,Helen Tiffin to explore human relations of the ex-colonizers and the ex-colonized.As immigrants in a heterogeneous culture, their attitudes towards their human relations and their culture identities of these pre-colonizers and the ex-colonized are complex. With a thorough study of the human relations of the characters: Santosh's happiness to estrangement;Dayo brothers' detestation to despair;English tramp's one versus many;the three whites' respective liberalist, segregationist or racist attitudes towards Africans, the paper attempts to uncover the different human relations as immigrants in heterogeneous cultures. In fact,In a Free State offers an indirect perspective to expose the people's lives in postcolonial era after the Second World War,aiming at providing a new and better understanding about V.S.Naipaul's works and understanding the characters in the novel,as well as stirring up readers thinking and exploration of real equal communication and freedom.
