V.S.Naipaul is considered as a typical immigrant and post-colonial writer in the English literary world. This thesis makes an interpretation of A Bend in the River from the perspective of post-colonialism.In this novel,Naipaul casts his eyes towards Africa, revealing the terrible situations of turmoil, dictatorship and poverty in Africa in the post-colonial period. In addition,Naipaul expresses his deep concern and consideration about the society, culture, economy and politics of the third world represented by Africa.By analyzing Naipaul's ambivalence, this thesis aims to help readers have a better understanding of this novel, and meanwhile gives the post-colonial writer an objective evaluation. The thesis elaborates on Naipaul's anti-colonial attitude. In A Bend in the River,Naipaul discloses the colonizers' terrible deeds by describing the great damage to African culture and economy, and expresses his anger by exposing the hypocrisy of the colonizers who plunder African resources in the name of revitalizing Africa.Naipaul also employs “water hyacinth” as an image to denounce the western cultural hegemony.Meanwhile, the thesis explores Naipaul's pro-colonial attitude.Specifically, while expressing sympathy for the colored people,Naipaul shows racial discrimination against them as well.He also expresses pessimism about the future of the independent Africa, which unconsciously shows his tacit approval of Colonialism.“Jungle” image is used to symbolize the barbarity and backwardness of Africa, which indicates that only by relying on colonizers can African progress be achieved. In the end, this thesis makes a comprehensive analysis of the underlying reasons, cultural value and realistic significance of Naipaul's ambivalence.Through the analysis of Naipaul's ambivalence reflected in the novel, this thesis explores the complexity and heterogeneity of cultures in the third world, reveals thediversity of human civilization, enhances the modernity of the post-colonial narration and provides the novel with special and magic power.Meanwhile, the ambivalent narration helps us feel the sorrow and loneliness of exiles in the marginal world, inspires readers to introspect and think about the philosophical and dialectical values of the novel.
