In recent years,China's legal system construction has gained momentum and the opening-up practice has expanded to the field of legal communications.Under such background,more and more attention has been paid to the legal translation.In this thesis,the author tried to analyze the legal translation on the discourse level and put forward strategies of Chinese-English legal translation based on the cohesion theory.According to Halliday and Hasan(1976),cohesion is an important grammatical and lexical device to establish a coherent discourse,which can be embodied by reference,substitution,ellipsis,conjunction and lexical cohesion.In this thesis,three local legislative texts of Guangdong province were chosen as the subject.Through the analysis of the features of Chinese legislative texts in respective of cohesion,the author proposed corresponding strategies to facilitate the translation.In a whole,this thesis consists of four relevant parts,namely,the task description,translation process,case study and conclusion,among which the third part would be most vital.In this part,the translation of abovementioned four kinds of cohesive devices were discussed in detail with ample examples and four main strategies such as preservation,addition,shift and omission were applied to achieve the cohesion and coherence of the target text as much as possible.Through this translation project,the author hopes to gain a profound understanding of legal text including its cohesive devices,and wishes to maintain the equivalence between the Chinese-English translation of legal texts to a great extent,thus make certain contributions to the translation and research of local regulations.
