With China’s entry into WTO and the rapid process of economic globalization, increasing numbers of foreign enterprises are introduced to China. As the laws and regulations attach indispensable importance to standardizing the behavior of enterprises, organizations and individuals, English translation of legal texts plays an important role, which can promote the legal construction of local regulations and explain our Chinese regulations to foreigners.Considering the specific characteristics of seriousness and exactness of legal text, we attempt to make a systematic analysis of translating the legal text Regulations of Tianjin City on the Prevention and Control of Atmospheric Pollution from the perspective of Relevance Theory. In the process of choosing the translation text, we combine the theory with the practice, explore the meaning of translating legal text guided by relevance theory and conclude certain feasible translation strategies, which, to some extent, will provide certain significance for legal translators and relevant scholars in the future. The source text is the local regulations of Tianjin City about air pollution, aiming at preventing the atmospheric pollution of the city, which contributes to promoting the legal knowledge about atmospheric protection, and acts an important role in decreasing air pollution in Tianjin city.This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one is introduction, including the background information, purposes and significance of this thesis. It introduces the current situation of legal translation and illustrates the benefits and significance of legal translation generally. Chapter two describes the preparation work composed of task preparation and theory preparation, which is mainly about the preparation work before the translation. The analysis of legal text presented in the chapter three is from the perspective of features of legal text, principles of legal translation, difficulty in legal translation and translators’ role in legal translation. Chapter four is case analysis, the crucial part which explains the translation strategies and translation theory of legal text in detail combining with specific examples. Chapter five is conclusion about implication of the study, experience gained from the translation practice and suggestions for further practice.
