Based on the translation of the first three chapters of the book H is for Hawk,a memoir about hawking written by Helen Macdonald, this report discusses the application of semantic translation and communicative translation in E-C translation of expressive text and informative text.Touching and humorous, this book gave a unique description of bereavement and the magnetism of an extraordinary beast.Since the whole book is a memoir, the writer tells her story in a colloquial way.Together with the description about hawk and goshawk,it’s not easy for the translator to have a good command of the translation project.Under the guidance of Newmark’s translation typology, this report mainly deals with the application of semantic translation and communicative translation in four aspects: title translation, lexical translation, long sentences translation and rhetorical translation. And each aspect is analyzed with several typical examples.Concerning with the important and difficult problems the translator met during the translation process, the translator proposes that attention should be paid to three aspects while doing translation: the text function, accuracy and readability. The translator should regard them as her emphases by using concrete translation strategies according to the real situation.Guided by these three emphases, the translator used different translation strategies like conversion, extension, word order adjustment and so on.And all the translation strategies and pre-translation preparations serve for the purpose of reproducing the flavor of the original text.
