| This report is based on the translation practice of the preface and the first three chapters of Educated: A Memoir written by Idaho-born author Tara Westover.The author,from unique perspectives,narrates an incredible series of her childhood experiences in a Mormon family to eventual redemption.The source text is featured with authenticity,the stream of consciousness and literariness.It is therefore of great significance to study the foreign culture as well as the characteristics of memoirs and raise the awareness of the importance of education.The source text consists of expressive and informative texts,which requires semantic and communicative translation to be recalled to guide this translation task.The translation challenges come from three aspects: lexical,syntactical and textual level.At the lexical level,interpretating translation is fashioned to facilitate target readers’ comprehension;splitting translation is adopted to ensure linguistic norms;and substituting translation is applied to achieve the communicative function.At the syntactic level,the literal translation and reversing translation are reasonably utilized to preserve the style of original text and make translated texts more consistent with the target language.At the textual level,such translation methods as restructuring translation and sequential translation are employed to generate smooth translation.The translation report is divided into five parts: the first part includes the introduction as well as analysis of the source text,and the significance of project.The second part is the theoretical framework,embracing the Text Type,semantic and communicative translation,the requirements in translating memoirs and the application of semantic and communicative translation.The third part incorporates the preparation,translation and proofreading process.The fourth part is the case analysis in terms of the difficulties in translation.The last part is the summary of the report,findings and limitations. |
