A Study Of International News Translation From The Perspective Of Constructivism

As globalization and localization coexist in the contemporary world,translation is of vital importance for international news communication.Unlike literary translation and technical translation,international news translation has its own features.Present researches on international news translation mainly focus on the linguistic level,like the analysis of the stylistic features of English news reports and the skills in the transformation of different languages.This study takes Can Kao Xiao Xi(Reference News)as the research subject and reveals the societal factors that influence the translation of international news from the perspective of constructivism.The study will contribute to the theories of international news translation and is of enlightening significance to Chinese news going global.This study analyzes the reports with Chinese issues that are translated from English news media published by Can Kao Xiao Xi in 2015 by adopting text comparison as the research method.From the analysis,this thesis finds that the English media in the West do not cover Chinese issues in an objective way,but rather twist,distort the facts or take a negative stance in reporting China.The translation of Can Kao Xiao Xi is not completely faithful to the source text,but a rewritten text in the aspects of diction,reporting stance and reporting angle with the aim to restore the facts in an objective stance,guide the public opinion and reflect the core values of our country.This study has also found that international news translation is not mechanic and equivalent transformation between languages,but rather a process of rewriting,reshaping and reediting the news materials in order to adapt to the poetics of the target language and the needs of the target readers.The source news text has become a new text via translation.This study explains such phenomenon from the perspective of constructivism.According to constructivists,knowledge is constructed by societal factors.From the analysis,the author finds that news serves the target readers.Societal factors like the function of news media,the political guidelines of society,the poetics of the target language and the need of the target audience influence the translation of international news.Therefore,international news translation is the outcome of social construction.This study may shed some enlightenment on Chinese news going global.We need to know how people in the outside world see us.But with the rapid progress that China has made during the past decades,it is time for China to proactively present itself to the outside.China needs to build a good image in the international arena in order to eliminate the distortions and the misinterpretations that foreign media made about China.Hence the strategies that Chinese journalists take are of vital significance.This study holds that when disseminating Chinese news to the outside world,we should put issues about people's livelihood onto the agenda.The mode of discourse in the communication process should be flexible.In terms of the effect of international communication,the focus should be shifted from the macro perception of the audience to individual micro identity.
