Being a unique and charming flower of the Chinese folk art, Northern Shaanxi folk songs are characterized by their rustic and straightforward melodies, fresh and unadorned language, as well as a lively and unconventional form, and they are deeply loved by people. As a direct and vivid reflection of Northern' Shaanxi people's material life and mental outlook, Northern Shaanxi folk songs serve as an important bridge which not only helps the local people to reach out to the outside world but also enables the whole world to have access to traditional Chinese culture. Owing to their unique role in cross-culture communication, in recent years, Northern Shaanxi folk songs have increasingly drawn the attention of a large number of scholars who are devoted to the translation of them.Eco-translatology is a new translation theory with Chinese characteristics which was put forward by Professor Hu Gengshen in the year of 2001. Based on both ecology and translatology, eco-translatology is a theoretical paradigm of studying translation from the ecological environment, containing such main concepts of eco-translatology as "translational eco-environment", "translation as adaptation and selection", "three-dimensional transformations" and "translator-centeredness". Over the past ten years, with Hu Gengshen being the representative figure, scholars both at home and abroad are developing and deepening the theory of eco-translatology, so that it is becoming gradually mature.By using eco-translatology as the main theory and using the core concept of "translation as adaptation and selection" as the theoretical framework, the present study analyzes the translation process of Northern Shaanxi folk songs. This thesis explores the translation of Northern Shaanxi folk songs from the following aspects: First and foremost, it expounds the previous studies on Northern Shaanxi folk songs and its translation; Second, it is devoted to the core concepts of eco-translatology so as to lay a foundation for the analysis of the major part;Last but not the least, it studies the translation of Northern Shaanxi folk songs at all levels, namely, from the linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. The study has arrived at two conclusions: 1) Due to the fact that the translation process of Northern Shaanxi folk songs is a continuous adaptation to the translational eco-environment and adaptive selection process made by the translator, eco-translatology provides both practical and theoretical guidance for the translation of Northern Shaanxi folk songs; 2) studying on the translation of Northern Shaanxi folk songs from the perspective of eco-translatology not only reproduces their cultural values and cultural connotations in a translated text, but also has a vital historical and realistic significance in terms of transmitting Northern Shaanxi folk songs, the splendid cultural heritage, to the world.
