This thesis forms an attempt to discuss and explore the characterization of children and its transference in translating fiction for children into Chinese from the angles of three focalizations and two types of character-indicators.Examples are taken from the Chinese versions of Little Women,Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the Prince and the Pauper and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, all of which are classic novels for children.Characterization of children and its transference in novels play an important role in fulfilling the plots and revealing the themes.Focalization, also named as perspective or point of view,is one of the most important narrative skills in fiction writing. The change of focalization may have different influences on the transference of characterization, which makes it worthy to discuss the transference of characterization in translation. This thesis first analyzes the characterization of children and its transference in translation from the angles of three focalizations, which include zero focalization, internal focalization and external focalization, and from two types of character-indicators,which include definition and description. The thesis then summarizes how translators transfer the characterization of children and discusses why their translation methods change or maintain the transference of characterization of children by comparing the source text and the target text.Translators should pay close attention to the differences of different focalizations and carefully deal with the relationship between focalization and the character in order to transfer the characterization of children appropriately and vividly.
