Since it was established en Peru,Confucius Institute at the University Santa Maria Catholic(USMC)has attracted a great number of Chinese language learners in different age spans and career backgrounds in Arequipa.At the same time,after all the efforts of the teachers at the Confucius Institute,Chinese language teaching has made some achievements in the local place.However in the process of Chinese teaching,the level of teaching Chinese characters should be improved.Thus,the author takes the Confucius Institute of USMC for example to study the teaching of Chinese characters.Based on the previous research findings and the teaching experience of Chinese characters,the author devised questionnaires for the teachers and the students at the Confucius Institute of USMC.According to the statistics and analyses,the author proposes some suggestions and strategies for helping to improve the teaching of Chinese characters.The thesis consists of six parts:Chapter 1: the preface to clarify the reason of choosing the topic,research purpose,research significance,research content,research status and methodology.Chapter 2: the introduction of Chinese character teaching situation at the Confucius Institute of USMC.The first part is about the situation of the teachers and Chinese character teaching,the second part is about the situation of the students and Chinese character learning.Chapter 3 : the analysis on the questionnaires of Chinese character teaching and aquisition at the Confucius Institute of USMC.The first part is about the specific analysis,the second part is about the interview and analysis of some students.Chapter 4 : the Chinese character teaching suggestions and teaching plans.The first part is about the points of teaching Chinese characters individually,the second part is about the points of teaching Chinese characters in words,the third part is about the points of teaching Chinese characters in sentences,the fifth part is about some points about the Chinese character teaching design of three lessons(primary,intermediate and advanced)which are combined with the responses to the questionnaires.Additionally,the author has chosen some characters and words which are hard to learn for the students to analyze.Chapter 5 : some related suggestions on the Chinese character teaching and studying strategy.The first part is about the suggestions for the teachers at the Confucius Institute of USMC,the second part is about the suggestions for thestudents,the third part is about the suggestions for the Chinese character teaching design based on New Practical Chinese Textbook,such as the exercises and tests in class,the error document of Chinese characters for students,the using of software.Chapter 6 : conclusion.To summary the main contents of this thesis and the main points of view expounded.
