With the economic and social development, international exchange in the field of popular science is more and more frequent. An increasing number of popular science books have been introduced into China since the 1970 s,and the translation of such books has been increasing. Therefore,it is of great significance to study the characteristics and translation of popular science texts in order to improve the quality of translation of such texts.Based on the translation of the first chapter of Antarctica:An Intimate Portrait of a Mysterious Continent,a book commissioned by SDX Joint Publishing Company, this translation report first makes an introduction to the translation project, including such information as its source, content, characteristics and the entrusting party's requirements, and then focuses on methods of tackling the problems encountered in the process of translation.First,an exploration is made into the translation of technical terms and proper names, which mainly resorts to literal translation, free translation, transliteration and borrowing existing versions. Then,in the translation of common names, the author mainly resorts to such methods as extension, conversion, omission and amplification. In translating sentences, especially complicated sentences, linear translation, shift of order, division and transformation of passive voice into active voice are adopted. The methods used in this translation project have played a big role in making the translated version precise and expressive.Hopefully, this report can provide some guidance for the translation of English popular science texts.
