A Study Of Visual Design For University Websites With An Example From Qingdao University Of Science And Technology

Webpage visual design is a design of web interfaces based on visual communication and expression.It provides a perfect experience to the users by using fonts,colors,graphics,icons,video and other design elements with interactive layouts.As the result Internet booming,webpage visual design is one of,if not the fastest developing visual designs in the past 10 to 20 years.But in China,not too many concentrations are put on webpage visual design right now.Especially for websites of the universities,there is a relative big gap between domestic and abroad in both design specifications and real applications.University website is an important part of its construction of information technology.It undertakes the mission of external propaganda and internal service.An unforgettable university website can express the university spirits,reinforce university identity,and attract decent applicants.Just providing information on the university website cannot form a deep impression in users' mind.Webpage visual design is a musthave for an impressive university website.This paper first discussed the theories of visual design by summarizing the visual elements,layouts,interactive experience and responsive design,and visual identity system.Then I analyzed the comparison results from more than 150 university websites from domestic and abroad,and provided some shortcomings of the domestic university websites.Based on the theories and analyses above,I made a webpage visual design for Qingdao University of Science and Technology as an example in the end.
