Aiding Vietnam against France was the first foreign military assistance of newly-established China. This action was literally interpreted as a Chinese aid to Vietnam's invasion of French colonists. In this sense,China plays a major role in the whole process. However, under the international background of the cold war,the military assistance was not only a matter of China, but also influenced by the factors of the United States and the Soviet Union. The most obvious factor is the United States. They involved in the war by providing direct military assistance to France,by comparison, the Soviet Union, another protagonist of the cold war,was involved in a covert way. They didn't intervene on the surface, because they didn't directly assist Vietnam,so people tend to think that the function of the Soviet Union in the war was not obvious. In fact, the Soviet Union were not involved in the dominant way,but in a hidden way throughout process and played a certain role on the basis of various considerations. This was an important external factor of the war which shouldn't be ignored. The recessive role played by the Soviet Union was as follows. In the original stage,Stalin put forward the advice of revolutionary division during Liu Shaoqi's secret visit to the Soviet Union. This proposal required China to undertake the task of leading revolutionary movement in Asia, which directly promote Chinese leaders to make the decision of assisting Vietnam. In the process of implementation,China also sought the views of the Soviet Union, they finally decided to support Vietnam through the way of sending military advisers instead of straightly sending troops, which could avoid granting excuse to America. In addition, the foreign policy of peace the Soviet union implemented after Stalin's death alsoobjectively enhance the transformation of China's attitude in dealing with the issue of Indochina, from active assistance to actively promote peace. In the guidance of the policy, the Soviet Union actively contributed to the convening of the Berlin meeting, and reached an agreement which allowed China to attend the conference of foreign ministers of five countries in Geneva with the USA,the UK and France,In the meeting,Before the discussion of each motion, the representative the Soviet Union would negotiate with representatives of China and Vietnam, and support these two countries in his speech at the meeting,on the occasion of the deadlock,Thanks to the active mediation by representative of Soviet Union, prompting the parties finally reached a ceasefire agreement in the three countries of Indochina. The role of the Soviet Union has always been an important factor in the settlement of the Indochina issue.
