| Xu Yuanchong is one of the most renowned translators and translation theorists in China.Having devoted all his life to translation,Xu Yuanchong has made great achievements in this field.With more than fifty translated works being published both at home and abroad,Xu Yuanchong may be one of the most diligent and prolific translators in China,who still engrosses himself in translation in his twilight years.Xu Yuanchong is undoubtedly a master of translation.He is the first Asian translator who wins FIT “Aurora Borealis” Prize for Outstanding Translation of Fiction Literature—one of the highest awards set by International Federation of Translators.The year 1994 witnessed Xu Yuanchong’s recognition in the international literary field when his translated work---Songs of the Immortals was published by Penguin Books.Despite his achievements as a translator,Xu Yuanchong furthered his studies in translation theories.Based on his rich translation experience and practice,Mr.Xu Yuanchong has established a profound system of literary translation theories,which includes ontology,epistemology,methodology and teleology.The author chose methodology as the object of this study.Xu Yuanchong’s translation methodology,summarized from his translation experience and endowed with art and science,includes the theory of optimization,the theory of making the most use of the target language,the theory of creation for loss,the theory of rivalry,the theory of super-conduction and the theory of clone.Due to the limited time and space,this study will only choose the most famous and controversial two---the theory of creation and the theory of optimization as objectives.Through the analysis of specific examples,the author hopes that this study will help readers have a better understanding on Xu Yuanchong’s translation methodology,thus benefiting their translation practice.Choosing On Chinese Verse in English Rhyme as the objective text,the author will deliver a detailed and profound analysis on the poems in this book,and expound how Xu Yuanchong applies the theory of optimization and the theory of creation to his translation activities.The first part will give a brief introduction to Xu Yuanchong’s translation theory system,the development of his translation theories and the significance of studying his translation methodology.The second part of will include the previous studies both on Xu’s translation theories and his works.The third part will exemplify the application of the theory of creation,and how he achieves the three beauties by this theory.The fourth part will illustrate the specific content of the theory of optimization and analyze how the theory of optimization is used in the translated poems.At last,the author will draw a conclusion that Xu Yuanchong’s translation methodology is the succession and development of Chinese classic translation theories.Being operational and applicable,his translation methodology is worth learning and applying. |
