Abstract/Summary:
The Tang poems are part and parcel of traditional Chinese culture, hence the research of the translation of Tang poems is of great significance to the going global of Chinese culture. With French sociologist Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic power as the theoretical framework, data study and qualitative analysis as the research methods, this thesis discusses the accumulation process of Xu Yuanchong’s cultural capital and the transformation of his cultural capital into symbolic capital, thus to reveal the phenomenon of symbolic power in poetry translation.Bourdieu’s sociological theory suggests that in the poetry translation field, the capital of translators generally manifests itself in the forms of cultural capital and symbolic capital.According to the types and amount of capital translators possess, they are assigned to different positions, and the resources they can obtain are different.Translators in the dominating position have the capacity to construct the field through utterance, the capacity is known as symbolic power. This research finds that, first,Xu Yuanchong’s capital mainly consists of his poetry translation works and translation theories, which complement one another and take different manifestations in different periods. At the beginning of his translation career,Xu Yuanchong’s translation works and theories are perceived by the poetry translation field as cultural capital.Through ways such as lecturing, publishing articles and monographs, joining academic debates, his cultural capital is being accumulated and promulgated. As a result, his cultural capital, which consists of his translation works and theories,is perceived by the translation field as symbolic capital.Second, the transformation of Xu Yuanchong’s capital from cultural capital to symbolic capital marks the transmutation of his position in the translation field. His cultural capital gains the recognition of the field and is seen as symbolic capital, the accumulation of which eventually makes Xu Yuanchong a person of great influence in the field. His position in the translation field also changes from the place where the occupant is subjected to the dominating culture of the field to the place where the occupant is capable of imposing recognition or opposition on the translation work of other translators.Through manipulating the form and meaning of acceptable poetry translation works,Xu Yuanchong reconstructs domestic poetry translation field and exerts lasting influence on the habitus of other poetry translators. The study on symbolic power in Xu Yuanchong’s Tang poetry translation helps to widen the scope of research in sociology of translation studies.
