The era of British India is an important period for the emergence and the develop ment of India's film industry.From the perspective of history,the paper reviews the hi storical conditions for the emergence,the developing process,the main characteristics and its historical influences of the film industry of British India.In the first chapter,the historical conditions for the rise of film industry of British India are discussed.Indian film is developed under certain social,political and cultural conditions and the combination of advanced western shooting technology and Indian historical culture.It's specified in four aspects,i.e.,the British colonial rule of India,the development of Indian economy,India's long historical culture tradition and the invention of film art.In the second chapter,it discusses the historical development of film industry of British India in detail.Objectively,progress had been made in India since the governance of British,and the early Indian film was developed along with the growth of new India.After the born of image in India,Indian film experienced ten years of short films,prevalence of features and the peak of silent films,then,it came to the time of sound film.During the economic crisis,there were new developments of film industry as well though in downturn.Later on,the sound film was promoted into its mature period by the rise of the national liberation movement.In the second world war,the Indian film survived and new hopes were brought after the war and independence of India.In the third chapter,the main characteristics of the film industry of British India are discussed.The first characteristic of Indian film under the British colonial rule is the strong colonial nature.The second is the profound traditional culture,which is shown as traditional cultural rituals and cultural foundation in the film.The third is the distinctive features of song and dance art.It is the unique glamour and sign of Indian film.The fourth is the strong realism which reveals sharp realistic problems and is full of humanistic care.The last one is the stereotype of scene and characters in the film.An interesting story will be told within two hours and the style of performers are always the same.In the last chapter,it mainly discusses the historical impacts of British Indian film.First of all,it laid the foundation for the development of film industry after the independence of India.Then the impacts brought by Indian Nationalist Movement were reciprocal with the impacts of British Indian film,and the development of Indian film changed the structure of Asian and world film.Thirdly,the British Indian film had certain impacts on British Indian society.It became a culture method for the British government to control India,accelerated the development of India's economy and brought with considerable profits,witnessed the improvement of the status of Indian females,promoted the development of India's national film,guaranteed the market of Indian film and enriched the entertainment life of audiences as well.
