My interest in Magritte's paintings helps this thesis focus on the code forms and the cultural context that reflected in Magritte's works.Firstly,I acquired a closer understanding of his paintings by reflecting and studying from time to time. Moreover, the mixture of horror, danger, comedy and mystery embedded in his works deeply attract me to further explore them. His works are characterized by specific symbols such as female bodies, bourgeois men, hats, castles, rocks, windows, etc.I regard them as the "code forms" of Magritte's works. This is because after putting aside the cultural context, these forms become more powerful. At the same time,Magritte attempts to exhaust all the possibilities and makes his paintings show in infinite forms of imitation. His paintings create a thoughtful "spiritual world" showing a dream realm to the best of his ability. The performance of the paintings has unlimited potentials taking them into a new realm of magic. He uses the philosophy of causality bringing up the paintings to a higher level by using texts.Through the study of anti-traditional painting thinking in his paintings,we can find out the logic and interpretation. All these are highly connected with the cultural context of his time.Through the introduction and analysis of Magritte's works, this thesis attempts to help me seek inspiration in composing my oil paintings and meanwhile to explore the possible radiance of Margaret in our time and cultural context.
