At present,the studies of Liang Yuchun's English essay translation are limited,in the academic circle,and the studies of its paratexts are ever fewer.The concept of paratext was coined by French literary theorist,Gerard Genette,in 1970 s.He thinks that the paratext is a kind of auxiliary material around the edge of the text,which are thresholds for readers to enter into the text,creating a changing atmosphere for the text.This paper using the Genette's theory of paratexts,aim to grasp Liang Yuchun's English essay translation from a new perspective.This thesis was composed by four chapters:Introduction,first give a brife introduction to Gerard Genette's theory.Then give a exposition of all the literature concerning Liang Yuchun's English essay translations,and point out the disadvantages on the previously resesrchs.Meanwhile put forward the research question,as well as the research formulation.Chapter one,those paratexts in Liang Yuchun's English essay translations.According to the difference between peritext and epitext,a secondary classification of paratext,We include the publisher,preface and note into the peritext,and the book review,correspondence,and essay writings into the epitext.Combined with the specific content of those paratexts,we will comb them systematically.Chapter two,translation value of paratext.In Liang Yuchun's English essay translations,the text takes literal translation,with explanations provide from the paratexts.But for the text,each paratext has different value levels.In the book,the cover image made an abstract generalization of the text,the preface deal with the general details of the text ahead,and the note following the translation deal with the specific details of the text.Outside the book,the book review,correspondence,and some essay writings,they put a cross-text interpretation on the text.The book review continued to introduce and analyse the writers works and essays style.The correspondence created a historical scene for the text.Liang Yuchun‘s essay writings imitated the text in its content and form.Secondly,the paratext is the platform of the translator,they recorded the translator's understanding of translation.These contents have important historical value for us to grasp Liang Yuchun's translation thoughts.Chapter three is about paratext's aesthetic value.Liang Yuchun's paratexts also devoted his talent and effort.Overall,Liang Yuchun's paratexts,they have a whisper tone and their contents showed the pursuit of personality.Secondly,Liang Yuchun's note absorb nutrition from Chinese ancient commentary literature.In those notes,he made the comments on the text or beyond it.Thirdly,Liang Yuchun's paratexts,they explored the definition,type,style,theme and other issues of English essay.They undoubtedly helped to build the theory of English essay.In a word,paratext had its own aesthetic character besides as a tool.Chapter four is about paratext's cultural value.First,the publisher controled our daily social culture,and then influenced the progress,scope and effectiveness of foreign culture's communication and localization.Second,the preface,note,book review,correspondence,and some Liang Yuchun's essay writings,they can improve the ability to integrate heterogeneous cultures,in the process of the input,comparison and application for foreign cultures.They provide the necessary prerequisite and preparation for the realization of cross-cultural communication and integration.Those cultural values were created by the paratext,meanwhile,they also serve the realization of the whole translation's cultural value.Conclusion,first have a review of this thesis,and point out the enlightenments and breakthroughs we obtained from this paper research.Meanwhile put forward some suggestions for further studies.
