This thesis aims to analyze Liang’s works from the perspective of existentialism. His works reflect a profound humanitarian spirit mixed with love, compassion andnoble temperament, making him a literary talent after Lu Xun. The scholar pointsout that Liang’s prose highlights the value proposition in the field of modernizationand it is an ontological issue beyond the logic architecture of an era. Through theinterpretation of cultural psychology and the inherent spirit of his prose, this thesisdelves into its aesthetic dimension and essential characteristics, thus to reveal theprofound existential containing. The structure of the thesis is arranged as follows:Chapter one introduces the concept of death and being present. Beforeexploring the existential features in Liang’s works, a consideration of his concept ofdeath is needed. His notion about death is the value dependent on his inner thoughtand it’s also an important thought embodied in existential philosophy. Existentialismargues that death gives meaning to life, and only by thinking about death cansomeone refuse to sink to destruction and thus to achieve the implementation of realexistence. It doesn’t mean to love death or take death as the perfect end of life, but torefuse monotonous life and think about the value and meaning of life. His proseproved the existence dimensions of the presence. He proved and considered lifethrough death and suggested that if one does not view life from the angle of death, hecould just be a normal man, which is only a spirit avoidance of real existence.Chapter two discusses absurd consciousness and the tramp’s state of mind. Theabsurdity is a very important value category of existential philosophy. Forexistentialists, the world of experiences is not real and the imperfection of humanexistence can be avoided. Death tears the harmonious life. Absurdity, fear, and deathanxiety constitute the truth architecture of existentialists. Like Lu Xun, Liang wasfirmly against the absurdity and despair. He praised the tramp’s state of mind. Chapter three interprets the existence and time experience. In Liang’s prose, readerscan feel his “anxiety” for time, which is very similar with “worry” in Heideggerideas. Liang’s consideration on time structure contains the extension of time. Thiskind of extension is not about biological life, but an integral appeal of life’sexistential meaning in a historical framework. In Liang’s artistic creations, heexplained how to get inspiration from the passage of time, and how to include thistiming to the present, which is a fundamental problem of existentialism. Only byreminding the past time can one realize the value and meaning of the present.Chapter four focus on the evilness and freeness. Liang was aware of the nihility ofexistence and realized that life can become meaningful by attitude. He believes thatthe excellent spirit is not out climbing, but to return to the inner nature, whoseexistence has a solid foundation. The outward unreliableness and existentialcontingency is doomed by the essence of life, the free spirit would realize thevulnerability and limitations in human fates. After experiencing the evilness afterextreme situations, they would achieve the free state of nothing bothering.Focusing on these issues, this thesis attempts to make a research on theexistential features in Liang’s works. It includes both detailed analysis and a wholecontrolling of Liang’s unique value appeals in his works.
