A Study On English-Chinese Translation Of Parallel Structures In Ego Is The Enemy(Excerpts)

This report is based on the English–Chinese translation of excerpts(Introduction and Part I)of Ego Is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday.Ego Is the Enemy belongs to the motivational book and it is about the treacherous nature of ego.This book draws on a vast array of historical examples from literature to philosophy to history.In this book,readers can meet many fascinating figures who all reached the highest level and success by conquering their egos.Ego Is the Enemy contains a large number of parallel structures which are magnificent and persuasive.According to Peter Newmark's text typology,this book is to fulfill the vocative function;therefore,the communicative translation method is the most proper principle to guide the translation practice.Under the guidance of Newmark's communicative translation,this report will focus on handling the English-Chinese translation of parallel structures.Before case analysis of translation,this report gives a brief introduction to the translation task and the translation process.In addition,the similarities and dissimilarities between English and Chinese parallelism and Newmark's communicative translation are also demonstrated clearly.The 13 parallel structures selected from excerpts are translated by applying the translation techniques such as following the original syntactic order,reinventing sentence structures,addition,omission,conversion,using four-character Chinese and so on.Through this translation practice,the translator's understanding of the differences between English and Chinese parallelism is improved and in-depth study and research of relevant translation theories are also conducted.Besides,the relevant translation skills are used in the process of translating parallel structures.All of these will play an instructive role in translation of parallel structures in future.
