As the best-known illustrator in France in the nineteenth century, Gustave Dore donates almost his lifetime to illustration. It makes the illustrated edition of the Bible portrayed by Dore become the model of "perfect match of words and pictures" to profoundly comprehend and convey correctly theological contents of the Bible, which has been high praised by experts and Christians for hundreds of years. Dore uses knives instead of pencils and portrays a variety of pictures in black and white. It plays breathtaking symphony and arouses distinctive aesthetic experience of readers. The magnificent illustrations merge with the text in the Bible while emphasizing each other while there is a blend of the attitude of realism and imagination of romanticism to present a lofty and romantic world of art for readers, which highlights appealing artistic charm and significant artistic value. The art of Dore has always had everlasting infection on romanticists and realists generation by generation. The sets of his illustrations have already become the social memory embedded in collective unconscious, which are presents for everyone of us.There are three chapters in the paper to study the intertextual relationships of"word-image" in the illustrated edition of the Bible by Dore. In the first chapter,elaborate the artistic value from the perspective of cutter techniques and modes of composition of illustrations, and trace back to the source of artistic style in romanticism and realism. In the second chapter, probe into the fundamental principle of intertextuality of "word-image" in the illustrated edition of the Bible by Dore from the perspective of semiology. Make a specific classification of the basic units of verbal signs and graphic symbols, illustrate the multi-level extension between the two kinds of signs and interpret how they realize the connection between the signs in the sharing of apperception in the end. In the third chapter, conclude the manifestation of the intertextual relationships of"word-image" in the illustrated edition of the Bible by Dore from the perspective of mutual relationship between text and illustration. Emphasize the transition of "verbal images" and "images" in the Bible and state the intensification, embellishment,opposition and deviation of illustration for text.
