Commercial intercourses between different countries or nations have always been an important object of history study since ancient times.So do the trade routes that provided channels for those business.The Silk Road was an ancient business route that originated from ancient China and connected to Asia,Africa and Europe.It promoted the interchange of economy,politics and culture all over the world.Exploring the Silk Road nowadays could both restudy the ancient history of economy and receive suggestions for the development of contemporary society.The Silk Road is a documentary well-produced by BBC,which shows the main and important events in the history of Silk Road.This documentary could help people become more familiar with the history of Silk Road.Since there is no official Chinese subtitle of this documentary,this interpreting practice takes this documentary as the material for interpreting,as well to provide a new way for Chinese audience to study the Silk Road with a broader view.The foreword part gives an introduction to the characteristics of interpretation and documentary,as well as the importance of this interpreting practice.This English to Chinese interpreting practice of The Silk Road produced by BBC could bring a new perspective for Chinses people to learn the history of Silk Road.The first chapter is the description of interpretation task which includes the background information of the Silk Road,brief introduction of the interpreting material and the meaning of this practice.The Silk Road brought flourishing business to areas it passed through and became a tunnel for new culture flowing all over the world.This paper chooses the first episode of this documentary which introduces Xi’an and Venice part of Silk Road as the interpreting material.The second chapter is Interpretation Procession.First is the preparation for background information of the Silk Road topic,and the making of term list.Then,in consideration of the characteristics of this documentary and to meet the requirement of truthful and fluent,this paper takes Interpreting and translation mode of Gile and Interpretation Comprehension Equation of Gile as the theoretical direction to this interpreting practice.Meanwhile,the three kind of difficulties and their corresponding solutions was also mentioned in this chapter.The last part is after-interpretation assessment.Through the summarizing of recording playback,translation text revision,and feedbacks from teachers and other students,the interpreting practice achieves good effect.Chapter three is translation case studies.After revising the translation text,some cases were chose and divided into three categories.First,adjusting to sentence order and structure.Second,application of knowledge reserve and understanding.Third,using interpreting approaches within context.Through these cases,this chapter discusses the advantage and disadvantage of them,and analyses how the translation mode of Gile and Interpretation Comprehension Equation of Gile was applied in the interpreting.Based on the analysis and discussion,the conclusion chapter draws three lessons from the interpreting.First,paying more attention to improve the language skills so as to eliminating the understanding barrier.Second,expanding the extra-linguistic knowledge and enhancing the conscious of cross-culture to understand the message and choose the proper interpreting strategy.Third,using concrete analysis method according to the concrete problems.
