Since the new period, dialects are more and more used in the creation of novels. In addition, some writers themselves hold their strong opinions on dialect, therefore,a variety of researches on dialect have been conducted one after another. And it is worth pondering that how and why dialect,as a literary phenomenon, can become a part of texts and what kind of aesthetic connotation it possesses after becoming a part of texts.Centered on the text, this paper mainly analyzes the above questions in terms of authors' own opinions on dialect.Instead of covering all works in all dialect areas, this paper chooses works of writers who come from northern distract areas as objects of study and makes a comparative study by conducting a detailed analysis of texts. And considering the study convenience, the paper specifically chooses writers of four provinces located in the Central Plains as representatives including Chan Lianke from Henan province,Zhang Wei from Shandong province,Jia Pingwa from Shaanxi Province and Li Rui from Shanxi province, because these authors, with a long time of creating works, have clear awareness of exploring language and have the enthusiasm for exploring languages. As far as a certain writer is concerned, studying the changing process of their creation can contribute a lot to the analysis of “diachronism”.In addition, the paper also involves works of other writers such as Chen Zhongshi,Mo Yan,Li Peifu,Han Shaogong, etc. And,a comparative study of works of writers who come from the same or different areas can be of good use of studies of “synchronicity” of dialect and can better demonstrate commonality, specificity, traces of evolution and the distinct aesthetic connotation of dialect. The paper consists of three chapters besides introduction and conclusion. The introduction mainly states the definition of the concept of “dialect”,a brief introduction of the history of the relation of dialect and literature, and classifications and reviews of current studies of dialects. The first chapter is chiefly about the background of the reviving of dialect in literature,in terms of three perspectives including literature currents such as XunGen literature,Avant-garde literature,New Realistic novel and so on,authors' opinions on language and dialect's suffering both from western languages and from mandarin. And,every section of the first chapter is proved by original statements and practical experience of writers. The second chapter mainly analyzes the distinct expression of dialect in the aspect of content and style by demonstrating the relation between dialect and descriptions of daily life.It puts emphasis on dialect's perceptual naming of things, primitive desire of dialect, dialect's contributing to the individuality of dialogues as well as regional cultural identity. The third chapter revolves around dialect's narrative functions. It mainly states dialect's aesthetic function to narration, dialect's promoting the development of plots, disadvantages and advantages of the strategy of the mutual conversion between dialect and mandarin and also the benefit of adoption of dialect in narration. And the strategy may result in deviation of understanding, and thus, produce the tension of narration. What's more, adopting dialect for the purpose of interpreting the life of individual reflects the theory of free narrative ethics. And adopting dialect in narration highlights its stand in folk narration. The conclusion gives an analysis about the current situation, existing problems, and future prospects.
