Tibetan area was in a turbulent period at the turn of 17th and 18th centuries.The Sixth Dalai Lama,Tsangyang Gyatso was born in this era,having experienced being invited to the Potala Palace and enthroned but then forced to leave Lhasa thereafter.Tsangyang Gyatso had not been invited to Lhasa and enthroned until he was 15,and was expelled from Lhasa for the identity of reincarnation after 9 years of enthronement in the acute conflicts with Lhazang Khan and Regent Sanggye Gyatso.Under the chaotic situation,Tsangyang Gyatso escaped from the Qinghai Lake area on the way he was taken under guard to Beijing.Hence Tsangyang Gyatso was mirrored as the innocent victim in this chaos.At the age of 14 he passed away for the sake of Buddhism promotion.Till today,Tsangyang Gyatso has been enshrined and worshipped locally,and so is his Lingta.This essay has taken the popular legend about Tsangyang Gyatso in Alashan as the research subject,and conducted studies concerning its social background,historical stem,detailed stories,inspiration and legendary characteristics.This essay is composed of four parts as introduction,body,conclusion and references.The introduction discusses the importance,current status,purpose,significance,new ideas,method and materials of the study.Chapter 1 makes a comparison between the practical and historical significance with the background of Tsangyang Gyatso's life experience and legendary history,states his contribution to Buddhism promotion in Alashan based on his Buddhist thinking.Chapter 2 conducts comparative studies among Tsangyang Gyatso's legendaries spreading all over China and analyzes its uniqueness and the inspiration.Chapter 3 covers the aesthetic characteristics and significance of the legend.Studies have been carried out from the respect of the underlying history,realistic and legendary significance and puts forwards its aesthetic characteristics.At the end of the essay,on the basis of Introduction and previous chapters the following tentative points have been made:Firstly,Tsangyang Gyatso's legend is rich and widely popular in areas like Gansu and Lhasa outside of Inner Mongolia.Secondly,the legend has been widely spreading based on his true stories and depicts thereof the locals' lifestyles,customs and habits as well as aesthetic characteristics.Thirdly,from the legend study,his key points on politics,Buddhism and ideals have been outlined.From his venturing spirit and sincerity to Buddhism we can always get positive inspiration on views of life and values.
