A Translation Project Report Of A Human Eye:Essays On Art In Society And On Lies,Secrets And Silence(Excerpts)

This is a report on the translation of two essays extracted from A Human Eye:Essays on Art in Society and On Lies,Secrets,and Silence:Selected Prose 1966-1978(1979)written by a famous American female writer Adrienne Rich.The titles of the two essays are as follows:Muriel Rukeyser for the Twenty-first Century and Vesuvius at Home:The Power of Emily Dickinson(1975).Through the introduction and description of Muriel Rukeyser and Emily Dickinson,the two American female poets and their poems,these two essays mainly show Rich's exploration of freedom,equality and lesbianism.She holds the view that the women have the right to participate in politics and the freedom to live a common life.As women's status became improved in the post-1970s U.S.,through the description of the two dififerent poets' lives,Rich introduces how the female poets express their own yearning for freedom and equality under heterosexual patriarchy.At the same time,Rich also redefines lesbianism.In Chinese academic circle where gender issues have been much discussed,translating Rich's works will have positive significance,helping people know more about women's individual,social and cultural identity.On the part of translation,under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory put forward by Eugene-A-Nida,the author selects some key points to analyze and uses various translation strategies and methods based on different characteristics of Chinese and English languages.During the process of translation,the author finds that the translators must take into consideration the characteristics of prose translation,fully grasp the background of the original text and the style of the original author.And when encountering the unknown words and sentences,the translators must refer to the materials and Internet and read through the translation version to secure the accuracy and fluency,so that it can be easily accepted by our readers.
