This thesis aims to discuss the characteristics of personal references in realizing interpersonal meaning in Chinese and English leader's speeches.In the light of Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar,this thesis takes the authentic speeches of President Xi Jinping and President Obama as the study material,and make an analysis from the aspects of first person reference,second person reference and third person reference.Halliday points out that the core of Systemic Functional Grammar is the metafunctions of language,which involves ideational function,interpersonal function and textual function.The main theoretical foundation is interpersonal function.Interpersonal function means that while in communication,besides transmit unknown information to the audience,language could also express the speaker's individual position,social status,and action motivations.Different language skills and strategies are used to realize interpersonal meaning in different languages.Conducting as an essential continent part of speaking context,personal references have diversities in realizing interpersonal meaning between different languages.As an essential type of speech,leader's speech plays a vital role in the growth of the country.Most of the state leaders regard their speeches as a weapon to clarify the political ideas and promote the national image.Pointing as the special features of leader's speeches,the speakers need to organize their words carefully.Being an indispensable part of speech context,personal reference has its own characteristics in the leader's speeches in Chinese and English.Based on the applied characteristics of person references,this thesis aims to find out how personal references realize leaders' purpose and the application of power,as well as establish appropriated interpersonal roles in the speech.In this paper,10 authentic speeches of Chairman Xi Jinping and President Obama are contained in the analysis material,through the usage frequency and characteristics of each personal reference,so as to discuss how personal references realize the leader's power and the purpose of speech.From the above analysis,we could find that there are some similarities in the usage of personal references in Chinese and American leader's speeches: the percentage of first person references gains largest part.In Chinese leader's speeches,the frequencies of first person references,second person references and third person references are 87.8%,6.7% and 5.5%.While in American leader's speeches,the frequencies are 73.1%?19.2% and 7.7%.The plural form of first person references gains a large part within the usage of first person references.Second person references mainly dedicate to the audience or the hearer.While the third person references refers to the third party besides the speaker and audience.The differences are that the frequency of first person references are higher in Chinese than in English.The omitting of first person references can be found in Chinese speeches but are seldom be found in English speeches.The frequency of second person references are higher in English speeches than in Chinese speeches.Third person references are used in English speeches,but seldom used in Chinese speeches.From one aspect,this research makes contributions to the personal references in interpersonal meaning so as to enlarge the application of personal references.Form another,the thesis can help audience to understand more of the diversities of personal reference,so that could enrich the application of personal reference in leader's speeches.
