Abstract/Summary:
With increasing international cultural exchanges,"Chinese Literature Going Global" has become a heated topic in China;more and more contemporary Chinese novels have been translated and introduced into English-speaking countries. But at the same time, the problem of unbalanced development of the translation and dissemination between Chinese and Western literature is still very prominent.Generally speaking, the Chinese literary works translated and overseas introduced are in small quantity and poor quality. It is significant to analyze the English translation and dissemination of contemporary Chinese novels to help breaking such an unbalance.Since translation in essence is the communication between different cultures, this thesis, based on communication studies, makes in-text and extra-text analysis on the English translation and dissemination of Yumi from the perspective of the translators, the original text, translation strategies towards culture-loaded contents, literary agents, publishers, and reviews from both professional and common readers, with 5W Communication Model as the theoretical framework. The analysis shows that factors having promoted the English translation and dissemination of Yumi include the collaborative translation mode between sinologist and Chinese translator, the regional features and universal values of the original text, diversified translation strategies towards culture-loaded contents, rich experience of overseas professional literary agents and large commercial publishers, etc. However, there are still some problems. For instance,in its English translation there is no explanation for the narrative structure of the novel, which results in confusion to some target readers;and the para-texts designed by commercial publishers with the purpose of satisfying the imagination and expectation of target readers lead to more concerns about the political and social contents. This thesis tries to find out experience and lessons from the case to provide references for more excellent contemporary Chinese novels to go global.
