Vocabulary teaching has always been the key and difficult points in teaching Chinese as foreign language.A large number of scholars devote themselves into exploring voculabry teaching methods and put forward several practical methods like teaching methodology of morphemes,context teaching,network teaching and so on,but almost all of them explain Chinese vocabulary from the synchronic point of view.This approach break the limitation of traditional vocabulary teaching method and lays emphasis on explaining Chinese vocabulary in diachronic view,which is very progressive.Besides,the Chinese teacher could describe the evolution of Chinese vocabulary by using etymology and help Chinese learners to realize the motivation and systematicness of vocabulary.This paper is mainly consisted of four parts :The first part is a summary of etymology and it presents the etymological exploratory method of monosyllabic words —— the paronym componential analysis and the method of polysyllabic words —— the morpheme textual research.The second part describes the present situation of Chinese vocabulary teaching and points that the majority of Chinese lexical approaches at present are in synchronic view.The third part classifys common words in international curriculum for Chinese language education as different types,.Those etymological words are classified in one group and identify the original semanteme with the formula of paronym.The fourth part elaborates the specific practice in applying etymological approach in vocabulary class and state the concrete teaching methodology in accordance with monosyllabic words and polysyllabic words.
