Analysis Of Zhao Mengfu's Regular Script Calligraphy,with <Sanmen Note> And <Huzhou Miaoyan Temple Note> For Examples

The important role of Zhao Mengfu in the history of Chinese calligraphy is that he restored the long-interrupted tradition of old masters by learning from the period of Jin and Tang,not only that,he practiced it by himself and impacting the style of his followers by the eminent achievement in the domain of calligraphy,and have a significant influence in the calligraphic practice of Ming and Qing until modern time.The authority of Zhao Mengfu was established in the Yuan period Although there were the Fu Shan's revolution and the prevalence of epigraph art during Ming and Qing period,Zhao's legacy has a unchangeable importance until now.The Regular Big script Calligraphy of Zhao's style was also established in this background.For promotion his epigraphy theory,Kang Youwei occasionally listed Zhao with Yan Zhenqing,Ouyang Xun and Liu Gongquan,he was not created a concept of Four Masters of Regular Script,but this group was naturally formed in the process of historical development.For adapting the need of writing the epigraphic big script,Zhao payed attention to study the style of Li Yong,Su Lingzhi,Lu Jianzhi and Liu Gongquan to enhance the strength of writing.We noticed that such group of masters represented the trend that combining the running script into regular script.For correcting the shortage such as bling bling and inflexible of regular script of Tang period,Zhao probably integrated the flowing element of running script,so as to create a new calligraphic style of regular big script of Zhao's hand from the regular big script of the masters of Tang period.In the Shuxuejieyao written by Zhu Lvzhen of Qing period,he summarized the leading feature of this new calligraphic style as Qiumei(forceful and charming),the combination of harmonious flexibility and marvellous energy promote the style of sturdiness and dexterity,that is the key elements of Qiumei,the skill point means to adopt a pattern with square hand and round manner.With the square hand,the writing will be strong and speedy which makes every strokes clearly.But without it,the writing will be weak and feeble.With the round manner,the writing will have rhythrmic vitality,and without it,the manner will be inattentive.Indeed,both having strength and style,this is really a higher and more difficult state.In another word,this is a new style of regular big script in the manner of freehand.Compering with the other three masters,the skill of Zhao is in the same level.
