J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings had been under a wide attention of all social sectors, since the date of publication. The writer’s myth theory and writing practice deeply influenced the western popular culture in the20th century. The Lord of the Rings was also known as "the father of fantasy", which placed the very high evaluation of the critics. This paper based the intensive reading of the text, in combination with the alienation theory, archetypal criticism, depth psychology, ecological criticism and some related theory, tried to show the novel’s theme through analysing the contradiction between the hobbits and the ring. The paper mainly consisted of three parts:The first chapter tried to show the ring how control the person’s mind step by step through the analysis of the hobbits’subtle psychological change in contact with with the ring. Thus pointed that the ring to the alienation of man, which in fact was the ring in a vicious consciousness to influence and change people’s good nature, make them gradually lose ourselves in order to obey the ring. The second chaper from self to save and natural redeemed two aspects showed the recovery of the human nature. The ring to the alienation of man in the novel had performanced the decline from the human nature to the brutish nature. So resisting the alienation of the ring, besides individual good moral character, full of divine power of the nature also had the power to recover the human nature. The third chapter analysed the theme of this novel from the most important image of "the ring". In the novel, the ring that represented sauron’s eye of the steamy desire, not only symbolized the people to "pursue" crazy worship, but also represented the "master spirit" of autocratic rule. No matter the flood of materialism or the "master spirit" oppressing the nature and distorting the human nature, its essence was the portraiture of the human existence dilemma under the background of industrial civilization. So, that the action of the Hobbit destroying the ring, expressed the query and the critical of industrial civilization.
