A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of Medical Theses

With the development of China’s national economy,scientific and technical exchanges with foreign countries become more frequent.A wealth of foreign medical journals,reports in international medical conferences and foreign medical literatures have been translated into Chinese.Nevertheless,equivalent attention on the English translation and output of Chinese medical achievement is by no means met.Experts and professional talents in medical translation in China is far from enough,and there is no a systematic translation theory to guide medical translation practice.Therefore,more practice and research on medical translation are of specially significance.Medical translation serves as a branch of scientific and technical translation and shares many common features of scientific and technical translation such as professionality,objectivity,accuracy and normativity.Through English translation practice of Chinese medical theses,the author finds that there are great differences between Chinese and English medical thesis:for example,the former is inclined to the use of subjectless and short sentences,while the later complies with the hypotactic feature of English and is teeming with compound and complex sentences;the former tends to use active voice and verbs,but the later is full of passive voice,and abstract nouns and prepositions that makes it more static.In addition,medical texts are often filled with massive medical terms and professional knowledge,thus in the C-E translation of medical text,the translator must be equipped with enough professional knowledge so as to make sure of the faithfulness and accuracy.Those disparities between Chinese and English have direct effect on the choice of translation strategies and methods.Based on those features and differences between Chinese and English medical thesis,this practice report is aimed at summarizing and classifying the problems and difficulties that the author met in translation,and analyzing the translation methods and strategies from the lexical,syntactic and textual levels.
