A Translation Report On The Soul Of An Octopus:a Surprising Exploration Into The Wonder Of Consciousness

This translation practice excerpts Chapter Eight from the book,The Soul of an Octopus:A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness,which was written by Sy Montgomery.In the book,Montgomery explores the emotional world of the octopus.The Soul of an Octopus is a nonfiction literature works and it is one of the finalists in announcement of US National Book Awards in 2015 and a New York Times Bestseller.The book was published in 2015 and there is no published Chinese version up till now.Thus,this is the first time for the translator to translate it into Chinese and therefore it meets the requirements of the translation report.In this book,there are much professional knowledge about the octopus.The author shows her love of the distinctive creature to the readers according to the vivid description of the octopus’behaviors and living habit.It allows the readers to know more about the biological knowledge and broaden their horizon both for the native readers and the target readers.The translator hopes to have a better understanding of nonfiction literature by translating this book and make a reference for the translation practice in the nonfiction literature works.In the process of the translation practice,by analyzing the difficulties in proper nouns,distinctive descriptions of the octopus and the long and complex sentences in the text,the translator discussed specific translation strategies in the process of tanslation and then completes this translation report.Besides,the translator also analyzes the limitations in translation and the suggestions in the future study.
