| In the context of globalization,the exchange of documentary literature at home and abroad is further deepened,therefore,the study of translation of this literary genre is of great significance to promote cultural exchange.This translation practice material is THE SOUL OF THE INDIAN: An Interpretation written by Charles Alexander Eastman,which mainly depicts the colorful religious and spiritual life of the North American Indians before the arrival of white people.Charles A.Eastman was a nineteenth-century American writer,physician,and reformer,who was also a halfSioux Indian.The translation of Eastman’s work can lead Chinese readers to further understand and learn the religious tradition and spiritual culture of the North American Indians.The selected material contains a lot of descriptions of real historical events,as well as vivid scenes and characters,so they are both “documentary” and “literary”.Thus,how to convey these two characteristics of documentary literature is a major focus of this translation.Through consulting,the translator chose the “Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation”(CEA)framework proposed by Li Changshuan as the analytical framework to explore the flexible application of it in the translation of documentary literary from three aspects of “comprehension”,“expression” and“adaptation” that ensure translation quality.In the comprehension,the translator grasps the content of the full text and masters the writing purpose by relying on the context and searching on the Internet.In the expression,the translator tries to avoid translationese,reflect emotions and use cohesive methods to truthfully convey the information of the source text,so as to retain its linguistic characteristics,and restore its original literary flavor.In the adaptation,the readability of the translation can be improved through collocation,annotation and domestication,so as to make the translation conform to the Chinese readers’ reading habits and optimize their reading experience. |
