A Study Of Chinese-English Interpreting Strategies Of Chinese Culture-loaded Expressions:A Frame Theory Approach

This thesis concerns itself with a research on the Chinese-English interpreting strategies of Chinese culture-loaded expressions under the frame theory approach.Due to their unique cultural connotations,Chinese culture-loaded expressions often become a difficulty in Chinese-English.interpretations.For a long time,the field has explored the interpreting strategies of Chinese culture-loaded expressions under different approaches,but the conclusions still remain controversial.In fact,culture-loaded expressions are a linguistic phenomenon whose different interpreting strategies embody different cognitions and concepts.However,there are few studies about exploration of the phenomena’s interpreting strategies based on the cognitive conceptual level at present.Frame theory is an important component of cognitive linguistics.A frame is the schematization representation of knowledge system on the conceptual level and often cultural specific.Therefore,this thesis discusses the interpreting strategies of Chinese culture-loaded expressions in Chinese-English interpretations.Because the cultural features of the frame theory possess two presentations—frame vacancy and frame component differences,the thesis is elaborately devoted to the following two questions:(1)What interpreting strategies can be adopted when frame vacancy appears?(2)What interpreting strategies can be adopted when frame component differences appear?This thesis identifies itself as a qualitative and case study,and the data are collected from the interpreting texts of our premiers’ press conferences,2010-2016.It is concluded that:(1)When frame vacancy appears,the strategies of frame transplantation and frame level adjustment can be adopted during the process of interpreting Chinese culture-loaded expressions.(2)When frame component differences appear,the strategies of frame component addition and frame component substitution can be adopted during the process of interpreting Chinese culture-loaded expressions.This thesis explores the C-E interpreting strategies of cultural-loaded expressions under the frame theory approach,which,on one hand,has the practical implications for interpreting culture-loaded expressions,and on the other hand,is expected to extend the applications of frame theory.
