On The Interpreting Difficulties And Strategies Of Culture-Loaded Expressions Under The Guidance Of Relevance Theory

As China’s tourism is becoming world-oriented,interpreters become the bridge for cross-culture communication in tourism,and encounter difficulties in the interpreting of culture-loaded expressions.It is of great significance to flexibly interpret culture-loaded expressions and improve interpreting quality,which will enhance foreign tourists,understanding about Chinese culture.Relevance theory indicates that communication is an"ostensive-inferential" process,under which this report analyzes difficulties and provides strategies for the interpreting of culture-loaded expressions during the"ostensive-inferential" communication between tour guide and interpreter as well as that between interpreter and tourists,which is conducive to studies in the interpreting of culture-loaded expressions.This is a practice report of guide interpretation about Dujiangyan Irrigation System.Chapter one introduces the interpreting task that consists of task preparation,task implementation and task evaluation.Chapter two is the literature review on interpreting studies,translation studies and culture-loaded expressions guided by relevance theory.Chapter three analyzes the interpreter’s comprehension difficulties and production difficulties in the interpreting of culture-loaded expressions.The former includes:unable to make contextual assumption and unable to have shared cognitive environment;the latter includes:failing to produce ostensive stimulus and failing to help tourists reduce processing effort.Chapter four is strategies,including inferring,accumulating extra-linguistic knowledge,free translation and transliteration with explanatory addition.Chapter five summarizes this practice in terms of significance and limitations.This report is conducted to provide interpreting strategies for culture-loaded expressions,help interpreters achieve the optimal relevance,improve guide interpretation,and promote the influence of Chinese culture.
