Interpreting Techniques Based On The Event-domain Cognitive Model

The Event-Domain Cognitive Model(ECM)put forward by cognitive linguist Wang Yin is an analytical method to make up the deficiencies of its former theoretical models.ECM is mainly used to explain conceptual structures and syntactic constructions.The model equips with a strong explanatory and applicable power,which not only includes the explanatory function of former models but also explains the phenomenon,occurring in semantic,syntactic,and text coherence.As an influential model in Cognitive Linguistics,ECM has gained great attentions from scholars who have already applied the model in interpreting studies.Although numbers of Chinese scholars have analyzed interpreting techniques based on ECM,there lacks of sufficient case studies.Based on ECM and empirical study pattern,this thesis adopts interpreting techniques from the perspectives of semantic change,sentence structure,and text coherence to analyze the case material of the 2016 Press Conference for the Fourth Session of the 12th National People's Congress(2016 Premier Press Conference).By using the interpreting techniques,the thesis analyzes the words,sentences,and texts in the language material of the case,and confirms the availability of the interpreting techniques of ECM.Interpreting techniques for semantic changes include semantic modelization,semantic expansion,and semantic specialization;sentence interpreting techniques include interpreting techniques on the syntactic level,and default information and its metonymic technique;text coherence techniques include the application of the dominance gist principle,the application of text coherence conditions in interpreting and the technique of speech prediction from dynamic analysis and static analysis.The thesis aims to make up the deficiencies of former studies of interpreting techniques based on ECM used in the case analysis,proving the availability of its interpreting techniques.This case study can broaden the eyesight of students majoring in interpreting and the vocabulary storage of interpreters,improve the language competence of interpreters,simplify complicated sentences,and make a prediction of the speaker's speech.By grasping the interpreting techniques concluded in the thesis and letting interpreters apply the techniques automatically and unconsciously,the interpreting process will be simplified.At the same time,the findings of the thesis will provide a theoretical reference for students majoring in interpreting to conduct dynamic experiments to prove the availability of the interpreting techniques in the thesis.
