A Translation Report On Fundamentals Of Applied Reservoir Engineering:Appraisal,Economics And Optimization (Chapters 3-7)

The demand for technical translation surges in current translating market,so does the study of technical translation in the realm of translation studies.As a graduate who is studying the MTI(Master of Translation and Interpreting)program with focus on technical translation,the translator has selected the 15,000-word English source text on reservior engineering as the E-C translating material.The report is centered on the whole translation process,during which the translator,theoretically inspired by the theories in translation and linguistics,attempts to figure out the solution to difficulities met in the due course of translation.This report presents the whole process of a translation project about technical text,including source text selection,parallel text readings,first draft of rendition,and optimal revision,and centers on how to conquer those challenging words,terms,phrases and paragraphs.The project is to translate a technical text from English to Chinese,which is a fundamental and introductory book on reservoir engineering.During the practical translation,the translator concludes a translation solution applicable to technical text,named as "Economy Solution".Being concise is the property of the technical text,while being accurate is the nature.In this paper,the translator attempts to justify the applicability of this solution in more general sense,based on the translation project.The report is comprised of four parts in all,excluding the bilingual translation text appended in the end.It first comes the introduction part,which displays the project background,and the analysis of source text.The second part demonstrates the challenges during translating process and analyze the causes.Then,in combination of the Martinet’s Principle of Economy in Language and Newmark’s Communicative Translation,the translator puts forward the solution of economical principles to above-mentioned difficulties.Definition of economy solution is given by the translator,so are the convincing cases experienced by the translator.In the end,it gives a general conclusion of the whole translation and report,as well as some valuable experience enlightened by the complete problem-solving process.
