Since the concept of mental rotation has been proposed by Shepard,follow-up research has been studied in different ways. However,at present, most of the studies have been carried out from two aspects:the expermental subjects and the stimulus materials, and the research on the effect of field cognitive style on mental rotation is relatively less. And few of these studies have yet to answer the question of what stage or stages in the field of mental rotation, which is the difference between the field independent subjects and the field dependent subjects? In this research, frist of all,the study use EFT to screen subjects;secondly, the stimulus material of the different dimensions were used to design three mental rotation experiments to explore the difference between field independent subjects and field dependent subjects in which stage or stage of mental rotation, and to analyze whether the orientation factors impact the difference. In the specific research,by using Jason et al.'s psychological rotation experimental paradigm,we designed the experiments of letters,two-dimensional graphics and three-dimensional cubes as stimulating materials, and divided the mental rotation process into cognitive comparison stage, mental rotation preparation stage and mental rotation stage,to analyze the differences between the field-independent subjects and the field-dependent subjects in these three stages, the results indicated as follows:1.The differences between the field-independent subjects and the field-dependent subjects in the three stages:(1)When the letters and cubes are used as stimul:There are significant differences between the field independent subjects and the field dependent subjects in the stage of cognitive comparison and mental rotation. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the stage of mental rotation preparation.(2)When the two-dimensional graphicsare are used as stimuli:There are significant differences between the field independent subjects and the field dependent subjects in the three stages. It indicated that there are significant differences between the field-independent subjects and the field-dependent subjects during the stage of cognitive comparison and mental rotation.2.The influence of orientation factors on the difference between the two groups during mental rotation:(1)When letters were used as stimulus, the orientation factor is added; The difference between the field-independent subjects and the field-dependent subjects was still significant in the phase of cognitive comparison and mental rotation.(2)When the two-dimensional graphics were used as stimulus, the orientation factor is added:the difference between the field independent subjects and the field-dependent subjects was still exists in the three cognitive phases.(3)When the three-dimensional cube were used as the stimulus, the orientation factor is added;the difference between the field independent subjects and the field-dependent subjects was still exists in the cognitive comparison phase and the psychological rotation phase. The results suggest that the orientation factors had no effect on the difference between the two subjects groups in the process of mental rotation. Conclusion:the results of this research support the view proposed by Jansen et al that mental rotation had three cognitive stage. In the three stage of cognition, the differences between the field independent subjects and the field-dependent subjects mainly occurred in the cognitive comparison phase and the psychological rotation phase, and this difference was not influenced by the orientation factors.
