On 27 January 2017,the US President Donald Trump signed a controversial"Immigration Ban",which soon became the focus of global media coverage. This thesis examines Reference News'(Cankao Xiaoxi)transediting of relevant foreign reports from the perspective of Mona Baker's narrative theory. The research focuses on the narrative material selection, reframing strategies and narrative impact.By comparative analysis, the author concludes that many ontological narratives(narrative of the self)are integrated into the overall public narratives in Reference News' transediting to highlight the objectivity of the reports. The narrator tends to carefully select certain contents of foreign reports and combine them to create a new well-structured narrative, which resembles a "jigsaw" or montage.News headlines and contents are reframed with careful strategies. For example, the narrator usually does not directly adopt the headlines of foreign reports, but instead adds corresponding titles and subtitles based on what is transedited. The titles and subtitles show some unique features in terms of their contents, number of characters and typesetting. In the process of transediting, the narrator adopts such strategies as selective appropriation, causal emplotment, narrative accrual via repeated coverage, and the repositioning of participants in and out of the narrative,so as to highlight certain aspects of the narrative and strengthen the narrative impact on the readers.Reference News' medium position is relatively neutral, which is showcased by objective reports. The narrative approach adopted aims to guide the public to understand the real picture of the news events with a fair attitude towards them.In short, the narrative theory provides a new perspective on translation, transediting and translation studies, and is worthy of further exploration and application.
