The language of biology textbook belongs to the category of EST(English for Science and Technology).A lot of discussions on the translation standards of EST have been made in translation field,most of which are centering around faithfulness,accuracy,understandableness and professionalism.To translate a biology textbook,the translator should not only make his translation meet the standard of translating EST,but also needs to ensure that his work will implement the function of teaching materials,that is,through precise terminology,strict logic and easy-to-understand language,to achieve the purpose of knowledge transmission.Vermeer believes that the purpose of translation determines the strategy,and the translator can choose certain strategies in practice based on the purpose,without having to pursue the absolute equivalence of the translation and the source text.Based on the field experience of translating Chapter 26 "Arthropods" of Biology,the author discusses three characteristics of biology textbooks,namely,the frequent use of terminologies,passive sentences and column names.Combining the principles of coherence,fidelity and loyalty,the thesis analyzes the strategies adopted in the translation of biological materials.It finds that the skopos theory is of great significance to guide the translation of applied texts,such as biology textbooks,and the three principles should be applied according to specific situation.
