The original text of this translation practice is selected from It's Getting Hot in Here: The Past,Present,and Future of Climate Change(chapters one to nine),published by American Houghton Mifflin Harcourt on March,2016.This is a popular science book about climate change.The author,Bridget Heos mainly introduces causes,results,and solutions about global warming,supported by lots of facts,experiments,and accurate data.Translation of this book aims to help target readers comprehensively understand climate change and draw attention to global warming.The key and difficult points are the translation of titles,words(which are proper nouns,special terms,neologisms and polysemous words)and sentences(which are passive and long sentences).So the translator applies different translation strategies and methods into translation.In title translation process,the translator mainly combines Chinese idioms and four-Chinese-character phrases with addition and omission.Faced with proper nouns and special terms,the translator chooses well established Chinese versions in the dictionaries or on the Internet;transliteration and annotation are applied to improve the translation.When dealing with neologisms,the translator analyzes their constituents and original meanings,and then refers to parallel texts.As for polysemous words,the translator analyzes part of speech and chooses proper meaning in context.There are two methods to translate passive sentences— keep the passive voice or turn it into active voice.When meeting long sentences,the translator analyzes syntactic structures,and then uses translation methods of linear translation,inversion and division.Through this translation project,the translator has gained a lot as follow: Firstly,different translation methods can be used to translate titles,words and sentences.Secondly,translation should not only be faithful to original text,but also conforms to target language habits.Thirdly,translators should not only possess a strong bilingual competence,but also have a wide range of knowledge.
