A Study On Network Language Based On Corpus Of Reports On Chinese Language Situation(2010-2014)

Internet has brought great changes on people's lifestyles since it was invented.Network language,as an irreplaceable part of Internet,has also became popular.As a social dialect used in Internet,network language is based on natural language.However,it is different from natural language.Since Internet is playing a more and more important role in people's daily lives,network language has broken the restriction of the platform of Internet and become an important part in people's daily communication.Language is an important part of society,whose development is influenced not only by language itself but also by its social context.And there is no exception for network language,which is a social dialect.Understanding network language is the precondition of mastering computer skills.Moreover,network language has played an important role in both cyber and daily communication.Thus,it is necessary to have an intensive study on network language.On the one hand,as a new research topic for linguistics especially for Lexicology,network language has its own special formations.The careful research on network language is supposed to push the development of modern linguistics.On the other hand,the relation between language and society is bi-directional and their mutual influence on each other is more obvious,especially in such a fast-changing society.Therefore,the study of network language contributes to the identifying and tracking of social development trends.Besides,the appropriate instructions on network language are of great significance for harmonious development of modern society.The present study focuses on the following three questions.What are formation methods of network language? And why can network language spread so fast that it has a such big influence on peoples' language life? At the same time,the virtuality of Internet and the diversified qualities of netizens must lead to the poor supervision on network language,resulting in the flooding of vulgar words among network language.Then what measures should be taken to regulate network language? In order toanswer the above questions,this thesis adopts two research methods: corpus method and comparison method.The corpus of this thesis comes from the book series Reports on Chinese Language Situation.Since its first publication in 2006,Reports would collect the language situation in each field in the form of reports or real-time statistics to present to its readers.The editor and publisher of Reports is the State Language Affairs Commission,thus,the authoritativeness and systematicness of Reports are un-doubtful.Taking the new words lists of Network Media in 2010-2014 of Reports as the corpus,the present author analyzes the formation of network language from two perspectives: linguistic levels and social context.As for the linguistic hierarchy perspective,the thesis analyzes the formation of network from phonological,lexical and semantic level.At the same time,the author also compares network language with natural language from the above three levels to deepen the understanding of the special formations of network language.The present author also further illustrates the formation of network language from the social context perspective,including political domain,economic field,cultural circle,societal life and environmental field.On the basis of formation analysis of network language,this thesis contributes to exploring the reasons under such formations.On the one hand,the arbitrariness feature of language,language contact and language development are the basis for the production of network language.On the other hand,as the producers and users of network language,the psychological needs of netizens,such as perusing certain identities,releasing pressures from work and life and avoiding embarrassing situations,are the motivations for the development of network language.The lively and creative characteristics of network language devote to enriching the modern Chinese.At the same time,the shoddy creation of network language arises owing to these characteristics.Moreover,the diversified qualities of netizens add the controversy over network language and some scholars even think that network language has damaged the purity of Chinese.Thus,it is necessary to regulate network language.As an important part of sociolinguistics,language planning devotes itself to dealing with the relations within language itself and between languages,which is of great significance in identifying and instructing network language.Based onLanguage Planning theory,the present author puts forward several suggestions.Firstly,the government should establish and perfect laws and regulations on network language and establish the real-named-system in Internet;secondly,experts on linguistics should spare no efforts to analyze and identify network language;thirdly,schools are supposed to pay special attention to teaching the difference between network language and natural language;and the last but not the least,as the main producers and users of network language,netizens should strict themselves in creation of network language.This thesis consists of five parts.The first part mainly introduces the definition,features and influence of Network Media,the carrier of network language,and presents the definition,research background and related studies of network language.The second part analyzes the formation of network language from the language hierarchy perspective,including phonological formation,lexical formation and semantic formation.The third part further illustrates the formation of network language from its social context,composing of political,economic,cultural,societal and environmental fields.The fourth part sheds light on the internal reasons and external causes of such formations of network language.The arbitrariness feature of language,language contact and language development are the internal reasons.The pursuit of certain identities,the needs to release pressures and to avoid embarrassment are the external reasons.The fifth part discusses how to regulate the vulgar linguistic phenomena among network language.The present author believes network language regulation should be instructed under the perspective of Language Planning and proposes several suggestions to government,linguistic experts,schools and netizens respectively.The conclusion part summarizes the whole thesis,points out the limitations of this thesis and proposes some suggestions for future studies.
