Research On Catchwords In Official Language

Catchword,as a language representation to reflect the social development,is not only a linguistic phenomenon,but also a cultural phenomenon.It is the true reflection of real lives in the dynamic development process of language.The catchwords show the phenomena,hotspots,psychology and culture of society in a specific period,which are widely used in various fields such as politics,economy,culture,education and social life.In order to timely and accurately reflect the social conditions and pass policy spirit,the catchwords are inevitably used in official documents which are tools for the state to govern the society and serve the people.In view of the great influence and exemplary function of the official language,how to accurately understand and use catchwords becomes an urgent problem to be solved in document writing.Starting from the definition of catchword,this paper,taking "the Bulletin of the State Council of the People's Republic of China","State Council's Report on the Work of the Government" and the public speech delivered by the central leaders as the main research objects,discusses catchwords in official documents by means of inductive statistics,case analysis and other methods,with a combination of the modern Chinese lexicology theory.This paper is divided into seven chapters:Previous researches of catchwords have been reviewed in the introduction,so as to locate the weaknesses in those researches and set the research object of this paper,i.e.,catchwords in official language.Meanwhile,the significance of the topic,corpus and research approach used in this paper are introduced.Chapter one gives an overview of connotations and features of catchwords,and discusses the differences and correlations between catchwords and new words,frequent words,cyberwords and slangs.Chapter two makes a statistics of use of catchwords in "the Bulletin of the State Council of the People's Republic of China","State Council's Report on the Work of the Government" and the public speech delivered by the central leaders from 2006 to 2016 for preliminary analysis of the scope and sources of catchwords in official language,as well as summarization of usage characteristics of catchwords in official language.Chapter three reviews the catchwords in official language from the perspective of linguistics.In particular,the catchwords are illuminated in terms of their length,elements,structural form,formation and semantic representation,in order to comprehensively analyze the linguistic features of catchwords in official language.Chapter four discusses the reasons for selection of catchwords in official language from the perspective of official documents.It suggests that the purposes of selection of catchwords in official language include realization of the administrative function,adaption to the communication effect and meeting the style requirements of official documents.In chapter five,rules of selection and usage of catchwords in official language are put forwards based on the usage and linguistic features of catchwords in official language.Chapter six summarizes main concepts and points out the limitations of this paper.
