This paper is a translation report on the river science.The source text is from the fifth chapter of the English book,How to Read Water: Clues and Patterns from Puddles to the Sea.It tells us various scientific knowledge on river,including the relation between the level of flood and the surrounding land,features of eddy and water table,as well as islands in the river,river bank and plants and animals there.A series of lively descriptions not only tell readers river and related science,but also correct people's misunderstanding on river science.This paper uses classification of text type proposed by Katharina Reiss and Skopos theory by Hans Vermeer to describe how the translator translates this text and how the translation purposes are achieved through the above theories,which makes common readers understand professional knowledge on river.This report includes five parts,mainly expounds project's background and significance,contents and language features of the source text,translation theories,difficulties during translating with related solutions,lessons learned from this translation project,and problems left.
