Headed by Mao Dun and represented by Wu Zuxiang,Sha Ting and Ai Wu,the Social Analytic School is one of the important literary genres in modern Chinese literature. In their literary creations, all aspects of social life are the contents of their literary representation. So “father-son relationship”,as an inevitable content of literary works, embodies different literary expressions and artistic forms. This paper takes the researches of “father-son relationship”in social analytic novels as an opportunity to explore its unique literary art.In the preface, focuses of modern and contemporary Chinese literature on “father-son relationship”are presented.Meanwhile, studies on “Father”image done by literary research community are summarized. Then all the research findings are classified thus to set three research directions. However, there are rare studies on “father-son relationship”from an internal angle of a literary genre. Therefore, the research objective of this thesis is “father-son relationship”in the novels of the Social Analytic School. In the first chapter,I mainly adopt the diachronicacademic research method to explain the literary motifs of “father-son relationship” which is not only an important relationship in family life, but also the epitome of social aspect.“Father-son relationship”has distinctive representations in the three historical periods of ancient, modern and contemporary China. This cultural background is the important basis and main contents of social analytic novels in the expression of “father-son relationship”.The second chapter focuses on the continuation and variation of the “father-son relationship”mode in social analytic novels.“Father-son relationship”in social analytic novels is classified into three groups, namely, the explicit “father-son relationship”,the implicit “father-son relationship”and symbolic “father-son relationship”.On the one hand, the three relation modes continue to convey the traditional content of “father-son relationship”,embodying the criticism of the feudal traditions of “Father”during the period of May 4th Movement. On the other hand, the politics and class were taken into it,that is approaching life in a social analytic way and reflecting the divergences in literature, society, politics and life compared with the previous ones through literary evolution. The third chapter deals with the different literary choices and reasons of social analytic writers in handling “father-son relationship”.The content of “father-son relationship”presented by them is to serve the social analytic work they are engaged in.Due to divergent life experiences, growing backgrounds, social concerns, they reflect in the “father-son relationship”with their unique artistic vision and different literary value orientation. The fourth chapter focuses on the value and limitation of the “father-son relationship”in social analytic novels. They inherited the contents of the 1920s' literature when dealing with the theme of “father-son relationship”and they also embodied the political and class content in the social life of the 1930 s and they provided a literary guide for 1940s' literature. It is one of the important literary chains in modern Chinese literature, and this intuitive way to approach life will inevitably carry preaching tone, impacting the maintenance of literature independence. In the conclusion,I analyze the studies on “father-son relationship”in social analytic novels from the perspective of writing background, literary contents, artistic achievements and literary comments.Studying and analyzing “father-son relationship”from the internal angle of a literary genre in a dialectic way can provide a research thinking for a systematic study on “Father”image, which is the main purpose of the whole thesis.
