Hengyang is a grass-roots city in the big inland province — Hunan.Being highly authentic,the 2016 Work Report of Hengyang Municipal Government is the authoritative material for the outside to know about Hengyang’s latest developments.This project,which takes the government work report as the research object,aims to explore the features and translation strategies of local government work reports and then provide some reference for the related translation studies later.Government work report is a kind of typical political document.Different from the translation of other cross-cultural communication materials,its translation is unique in lexical and syntactical level so translators need to correctly handle it.The enormous differences between Chinese and foreign culture,the local characteristics of grass-root cities,and the unique features of political documents——all these have made the translation of government work report a challenging field.To make full preparation for the translation task,the writer has learned the relevant documents about political text analysis and has read some parallel texts related to the government work report translation.In this way,the writer has been more skilled at translating this kind of literary form,and have had a better understanding of the stylistic characteristics and the common vocabulary,sentence patterns,etc.At the same time,this project is guided by Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory and functionalist school’s text type theory.After the earnest translation practice and careful deliberation,the report has summarized some corresponding translationstrategies.Starting from the lexical and syntactical aspects,this report analyzes typical cases and then puts forward the translation strategies applicable to proper nouns,abbreviated expressions,non-subject sentences,parallelism and sentence groups.These translation strategies are as follows: first,literal translation and transliteration in combination of Internet searching are adopted to deal with proper nouns;second,literal translation,literal translation with annotation and free translation are used to handle abbreviated expressions in order to achieve functional equivalence;third,as for the translation of non-subject sentences,the translator adds the omitted subjects or applies passive voice;fourth,to deal with parallelism,the translator mainly adopts literal translation,combine translation and word conversion;finally,in consideration of target readers,sentence groups are translated with addition and division techniques so as to realize hypotaxis.Through the translation practice,the writer is aware that the translation of political text is not an easy task and the writer hopes to provide reference for the relevant translation studies in the later days.
