| Mao Zedong is a well-known revolutionist and politician.At the same time,he is also a famous poet.Mao Zedong's poems are written in China's special historical period,which have a unique memory,rich cultural connotations and distinctive features.These characteristics on the one hand,make their readability and influence stronger,but on the other hand,it is these characteristics that bring some difficulties in the spreading of Mao Zedong's poems.From the 1930s to now,during this period of 70 years,there appeared 28 English versions of Mao Zedong's poems.Among them,Zhao Zhentao's English version of Mao Zedong Poems was highly praised by scholars and readers at home and abroad.Zhao argued that "the translated text can be faithful to the original text in style and rhyme only when the translator translates free verse by means of free verse,and metrical verse by means of metrical verse." Eco-translatology is an ecological approach to translation studies or translation studies from an ecological perspective.Regarding Zhao Zhentao's English version of Mao Zedong Poems as the research object,this thesis attempts to find out whether this translation is a process of adaptation and selection from the perspective of eco-translatology,and if so,how he succeeds in the process.From the analysis,a conclusion can be drawn that Zhao's English version of Mao Zedong Poems is the result of his adaptation and selection.Zhao Zhentao successfully translates Mao Zedong's poems demonstrated in two aspects.On the one hand,he owns bilingual proficiency,receives good education,and covers a wide range of knowledge and on the other hand,he is enthusiastic about translation and has his own translation principles,which not only makes him competent for the translation of Mao Zedong's poems,but also conforms to his own internal demand.Zhao Zhentao,who was proficient in Chinese classical literature,began to translate Mao Zedong's poems during the "Cultural Revolution".He chose to translate Mao's poems in this special period,which was not only out of his interest but also satisfied the western readers' curiosity about Chinese culture at the same time.As for the translating process,a case study is conducted to discuss Zhao's adaptive selection to achieve transformation on linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions.For the linguistic transformation,Zhao's adaptive selection was mainly reflected in the aspects of language form,figure of speech and the style.For the cultural transformation,Zhao's adaptive selection was mainly showed in color words,allusions and numerals.For the communicative transformation,Zhao delivered the original intention to the target readers by the choice of certain words.In addition,during the whole process of translation,Zhao Zhentao,as the sole subject of adaptation and selection,defines the translator's dominant status in the translation practice.This study not only offers some insights for the study of the translation of Mao Zedong's poems,but also demonstrates the explanatory power and practicality of eco-translatology. |
