A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of A History Of Loneliness (Chapter Three)

The source text of the translation project is excerpted from A History of Loneliness by John Boyne.The work was published in 2014,and there is no Chinese translation up to now.This is one of the important reasons why the translator chooses the work as the translation text.John Boyne is a famous Irish novelist,playwright and film producer nowadays.The writer John Boyne is designed to uncover sexual abuse and physical violence of priests on children and the complete concealment of the crimes by the hierarchy of the Catholic Church in Ireland in the perspective of the protagonist Odran Yates.It is a novel that aims to enlighten people to examine the subject from a broader perspective and to reconsider the lives of all those who have suffered.In the report,the translator mainly discussed the difficulties on the lexical,syntactic and discourse levels,such as the translation of proper nouns and other words,long sentences and dialogues.Based on reading the source text repeatedly,accessing to relevant information and looking up to the relevant dictionary,the translator uses transliteration and annotation methods to render proper nouns,conversion,amplification,extension and substitution methods to translate other words in the translation process.At the same time,the translator adopts cutting,reversing,splitting off and recasting to translate the long sentences,and also adopts certain skills to translate dialogues to reproduce the images of the characters of the original text.The translator benefits a lot from this translation practice.It is helpful to improve the translator’s ability to solve the translation difficulties under the guidance of relevant theories and strategies and language expression ability.Most importantly,the translation practice can facilitate the Chinese readers to understand the subject matter of the text and it is also of great significance for other translators to translate the same kind of texts.
