Object Empathy is an ability to understand others and perspective taking. It is an important part of the physician humanities and also an important part of professionalism.Firstly, based on previous studies made by relevant scholars, the five-year medical students are taken as the research subject to make a survey on the characteristics of the empathy.Secondly,The Balint Group is made about the effects of empathy training on the empathy of medical students. Methods In the research 1,the Chinese version of the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy(JSPE-S),Emotional Intelligence Scale(EIS),Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ-RSC),Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran(EMBU)and the College students' interpersonal communication ability of self rating scale are handed out to 575 medical students. In the research 2,39 students are incited and randomly divided into three groups, with 13 students for each group. One is the experimental group, accepted 8 weeks(1 times a week,a total of 8)Balint groups training. One is the placebo group, accepted general health propaganda. And the control group did not receive any intervention. The Balint group is made on the empathy ability of 13 students in the experimental group so as to judge whether intervention experiments on the empathy ability can improve tester's empathy ability in a short time. The Balint group was setted by Balint, who is a famous psychoanalyst of Budapest school,an outstanding representative of the Independent School of Great Britain object relations theory.JSPE-S was used to test and analyz three groups in baseline and 8 weeks after the intervention. Results According to the research 1,Empathy scores on gender and grade significantly differed between different terms. There are no significant difference among origins. There exist significant differences between medical students of different genders in terms of empathic concern, transpositonal consideration and the overall empathy, female scored significantly higher than male((t =-2.498,P<0.05).The class leadership and no-leadership greatly differ with other each in transpositonal consideration(t=-1.208,P<0.05).The only child college student and non-only child greatly differ with other each in empathic concern(t=2.140,P<0.05).When grades are taken as a factor, there exist significant differences between students in different grades in terms of empathic concern, transpositonal consideration and overall empathy. The emphatic concern term of sophomores greatly differ with that of freshmen, juniors and fifth grades(MD1=2.192,P<0.05;MD3=3.252,P<0.05;MD5=2.682,P<0.05).The transpositonal consideration term of juniors greatly differ with that of sophomores and seniors(MD2=-0.901,P<0.05;MD4=-1.398,P<0.05).Based on a descriptive statistical analysis, the sophomores obtained the highest scores in test.According to the research 2,in the experimental group post-training scores were significantly higher than pre-training(ZPT =-2.194,P<0.05;ZEmpathy=-2.552,P<0.05),placebo and control group have no significant difference.Among the 3 groups, the experimental group's score was significantly higher than the placebo group and control group(HPT =9.065,P<0.05;HEmpathy=8.842,P<0.05).In post hoc test, the experimental group scored significantly higher than placebo and control group(D experimental-placebo=10.317,P<0.05;D experimental-control =10.458,P<0.05).Conclusion Gender and grade have influences on empathy, emotional intelligence, personality, parental upbringing and interpersonal skill are significantly related to medical students' empathy ability.Based on statistical analyses of the experimental group, placebo and control group before and after the experiment,it proves that the Balint Groups training plays a great role in improving the empathy ability of medical students.
