The Study Of Translation Strategy Of Political Science Text

The Rand Corporation is one of the most influential Think Tanks in the US.The Rand Corporation has developed from a strategy consultation service provider for United States Department of Defense into a comprehensive Think Tank tackling issues in such fields as politics,economy and military.The book La RAND Corporation(1989-2009)-La reconfiguration des savoirs strategiques aux Etats-Unis presents the strategic changes and foreign politics of United States.From November 2016 to March 2017,the author of this paper translated of the third part of this book,amounting to near 20 000 Chinese characters.The author wrote this paper based on this translation practice.In view of the theory of functional equivalence put forward by Eugene A.Nida,a famous American translator,this paper analyzed and summarized this translation practice which focuses on three aspects,that is vocabulary,sentence and chapter,and wishs to explore effective translation strategies that can be applied to Political Science texts.This paper is divided into four sections:The first section explained how the translation was initiated and the requirements of the publishing company.Given the fact that the book was translated by more than one person,the publishing company required that translated personal names and style should remain consistent.The second section introduced the whole translation process,the preparation,and proofreading.The preparation comprises the reading of the original text and establishment of translation plan;the translation comprises the selection of translation theories,the communication between translators and first translation;proofreading consisted of solving problems from first translation and correcting the translation twice.The third section presented lots of examples in this translation practice,and based on the theory of functional equivalence of Nida,the author analyzed this translation from three aspects,that is vocabulary,sentence construction and chapter.The author summarized three methods for translating vocabularies:understanding vocabularies via other languages,referring to similar structures in Chinese language and making use of background knowledge.In terms of sentences,the author analysed the translation methods of connective:taking different expressions in translated text for the same expression in original texts;using the same expression in translated texts for different expressions in original text.In terms of chapter,given lots of interview records in original text,attention is expected to be paid to the differences between spoken language and written language during translation,therefore,the author put forward two methods which can be effectively used to check the translation:thinking about daily life and reading the translation aloud.The fourth section summarized this translation practice.The author analyzed what she has learnt,the shortcomings of this practice,and hopes that her theoretical and practical capacities could be further improved in the future.
